Chiclets (2010)

Chiclets is my take on a multi-voice granular synthesizer before I knew what granular synthesis was, inspired by the visual texture and sound of the coin-operated machines containing the candy of this software’s name.

A user has control over the rate of the “chiclets” either directly or by defining low and high bounds within which a rate is stochastically chosen, and the attack, decay, and depth (intensity) of their volume envelope.

The speed of the chiclets is controlled either directly, by defining low and high bounds within which a rate is stochastically chosen, or by using the frequency controller, which allows the user to define pitch classes and a rate in milliseconds; the chosen pitch classes are then jumped to stochastically at the rate set.

The panning of the chiclets is controlled either directly or by defining low and high bounds within which a panning location is stochastically chosen. Another parameter (“Pan Speed”) determines the speed and intensity by which the chiclets diverge from the chosen panning, allowing for dynamically-panning sounds.
